By engaging Josephine Smith - WordSmith WA to copyedit or proofread your manuscript, you agree to the following terms and conditions.
The fee
The fee for the job will be agreed before work begins. Should further material be added by you to the work (such as extra chapters), a separate price for that will be negotiated based on the initial price.
For large pieces of work or for new clients, I will send you an invoice for a deposit of up to $500 to be paid before the work starts. I will then send you an invoice for the remaining balance on completion of the work. For smaller pieces of work or regular clients, I will invoice the full fee once the work has been completed.
Interim payments may be required if the work is over several months or there are delays during the project. These will be agreed at the time.
Unless otherwise agreed, the fee quoted is for one pass of a manuscript. Additional passes are new projects, the terms of which will be agreed separately. Any further editing work will be charged at a rate of $60 per hour. However, answering questions about the work and doing some minor work would be included in the original fee.
Renegotiation
This fee is based on the information and the sample I receive from you. If it becomes apparent that significantly more work is required than has been anticipated or if additional tasks are requested, the fee or the deadline may be renegotiated.
Cancellation
If the service is cancelled (in writing) for any reason before the work has started, I will return the deposit less a $100 admin fee. If the job is terminated (in writing) before completion, I will return the edited work done to that date and invoice for the hours worked at a rate of $60 per hour.
Completion
A deadline date for completion of the work will be mutually agreed between us before the work starts. Completion of the work would, of course, depend on the promptness and regularity of communication and the absence of unforeseen emergencies for both parties. In the unlikely event that a deadline has to change on either side (severe illness, family bereavement, technical issues etc.), we will contact each other as soon as possible to agree a revised date.
Any queries will be communicated to you via email. It is assumed that each party will endeavour to return emails within a reasonable time.
Confidentiality
All work received is treated as confidential. All work on the document will be done by me, Josephine Smith; I do not subcontract to anyone else.
If you are unsatisfied with my work, please contact me and explain why so that I can rectify the situation.
Disclaimer
Please bear in mind that while every attempt will be made to return an error-free document, perfection is impossible to achieve, particularly in long pieces of work. Please make sure that you read through the edited version yourself and make sure you are happy with it before publishing. The final responsibility for the integrity of the work remains with you, the author.
While I will endeavour to point out any potential legal issues, you, the author, are responsible for ensuring the manuscript is appropriate for publication and I, the editor, can accept no liability for any action raised as a result of incorrect or defamatory material. Copyright in the work and editorial responsibility, specifically in the matter of defamation and plagiarism, rests with you, the author.
The copyright of any content created by me during the editing process remains mine until the full fee is paid, at which time the copyright becomes yours.
Permissions
If I would like to use your name and link to your book on my website or social media, or if I require a reference, I will ask permission from you in writing (via email) before going ahead.
At the end of the editing process, I may ask for a testimonial from you to put on my website or social media. I will ask permission from you in writing (via email) regarding any minor editing changes to the testimonial and also to include your name alongside the testimonial.
If you wish to mention me in your published work’s acknowledgements section, you will give me the opportunity to review any such mention prior to publication, or to decline to be mentioned.
I keep copies of the work for at least one year following completion, both the original and the edited versions. If you wish me to delete the documents from my system before this time, please let me know in writing (via email).
